Covering Up Scars with SMP

Hair loss can be very frustrating and is a source of significant anxiety for many men and women. Fortunately, hair loss solutions have come a long way, and now people have a few different remedy procedures to consider for hair transplants. Two of the most common are Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Even with the modern hair restoration techniques, hair transplant scars are inevitable with these invasive procedures.

One technique on the rise to cover up scalp scarring is scalp micropigmentation. This minimally invasive procedure is less painful than a regular tattoo; it’s actually been referred to as a “scalp tattoo”. Organic pigment applied to the scalp to make scarring caused by FUT and FUE less visible. The results are both mostly immediate and semi-permanent, lasting about 4-6 years.

Types of Hair Transplants

  • Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)/ Dot Scars

The FUE procedure involves the extraction of individual hair follicle grafts from the donor regions using a micro-punch tool. It leaves the patient with tiny circular scars spread over the donor area. These scars are less noticeable and can be concealed by the remaining hair around them.

  • Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)/ Strip Scars

With this procedure, a strip of hair-bearing scalp is removed from the donor area. It’s further dissected into single hair grafts that are transplanted into recipient areas of hair loss. This leaves a fine linear scar at the donor area, hence the name “strip scars”. The FUT procedure is more invasive, and leaves more scarring than FUE.

Concealing Hair Transplant Scars with Scalp Micropigmentation

Sometimes, scarring never fully heals, or never gets fully covered by surrounding hair.  Because of this, people turn to SMP.  The pigment used in scalp micropigmentation gives the look of a fuller head of hair, which helps conceal scarring.
